Go down and lift the lever, and let go of it when the symbol to the left turns red. Enter the symbols you found in the puzzle board to get access to. It doesn't work, so you have to trudge back over there and see if you were missing something. Go to the back of the hallway and press the red button to lower the stairs. Go back to the south position of the fortress, and back to where you first arrived in the age. Instead, you'll find something you *think* is a clue, or you think you might have a way to interpret the clue, and so you traverse to the other side of the map to try it out.
